I wanted to share my posts on facebook, but facebook does not recognize the images in my posts and presents the link dry an unattractive. Any ideas how I could modify the template so that images are shown in facebook shares?May 30, 2014 at 9:36 am #8104iceableMay 30, 2014 at 9:36 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Can you please post a link to your site (especially the post you tried to share) so I can have a look and help you find see what can cause this?May 30, 2014 at 10:34 am #8111AngelinaMay 30, 2014 at 10:34 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Sure, it happens with all posts though. For example: http://chess.kontini.com/looking-for-plan-14-ghosts-in-the-chessboard/
I tried to put a featuring image but that did not work in making facebook catch an image either. (Wonder if there is a way to make an image of the post show in the first page, without using a featuring image.)
I also tried to put a caption, an alt text, an attribute title (by editing the image), but none of these works either.May 31, 2014 at 11:15 am #8115iceableMay 31, 2014 at 11:15 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Well this is a bit weird, Facebook is supposed to crawl the whole page and catch any and all available images by default, unless it is instructed otherwise by og tags in your page – and you don’t seem to have any of these tags currently.
Anyway, you can certainly fix it (and even enhance how facebook “reads” your post upon sharing by adding correct open graph meta tags to your site.
These tags will tell Facebook the exact info it needs to share your post so it doesn’t need to “scan, catch and guess”, and you can use a plugin to add them automatically: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-facebook-open-graph-protocol/June 1, 2014 at 10:54 pm #8128AngelinaJune 1, 2014 at 10:54 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I installed this plugin and activated but facebook still does not catch the images. Do I have to wait some time or do I have to set the plugin somehow up?June 1, 2014 at 11:00 pm #8129AngelinaJune 1, 2014 at 11:00 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
I entered my facebook ID in the settings. Maybe I have to wait?June 3, 2014 at 11:30 am #8142iceableJune 3, 2014 at 11:30 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Hi, I’ve just re-checked your site and confirm the OG tags are correctly placed but it seems that the image have been deleted from your site.
For example this post: http://chess.kontini.com/looking-for-plan-14-ghosts-in-the-chessboard/, contains this tag:
<meta property="og:image" content="http://chess.kontini.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lfp14.jpg">
But http://chess.kontini.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lfp14.jpg doesn’t exist anymore.
When you upload an image in WordPress, the original file is supposed to stay there, and WordPress will create resized versions, named after the orginal filename + the size.
lfp14.jpg does not exist on your site, but the resized version ‘lfp14-200×200.jpg’ does. This makes me think either you (or probably a plugin meant to delete some images to reduce disk space use) deleted this original image after WP created the resized version!June 3, 2014 at 12:56 pm #8150AngelinaJune 3, 2014 at 12:56 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Smells like a hotlink protection issue. I will check it on my server and get back to you.June 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm #8151AngelinaJune 3, 2014 at 1:00 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
No, you are correct. The image does not exist in the server. I don’t know what could be causing this. The only plugins I have are these:
Contact Form 7
Limit Login Attempts
WP Facebook Open Graph protocolJune 3, 2014 at 1:03 pm #8152AngelinaJune 3, 2014 at 1:03 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Let me report here another template issue related to images. Each time I update the header, the template switches from showing the title in text, to using an image. And I have to manually change that to prevent a (default) image from appearing instead of the blog title text.June 3, 2014 at 2:35 pm #8160iceableJune 3, 2014 at 2:35 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
None of these plugins should be messing with images, so how and why it disappeared is kind of a mystery! Anyway, you can simply delete it from your post and re-upload it and it should be fixed.
The other issue sounds weird, not sure how updating the header image can change some theme options settings but I’m going to make some test and investigate this and report back if I find anything. Thanks for reporting it!June 3, 2014 at 8:36 pm #8176AngelinaJune 3, 2014 at 8:36 pmReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Re-uploaded and still the image does not exist. A mystery!June 4, 2014 at 11:02 am #8180iceableJune 4, 2014 at 11:02 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
Pretty weird indeed…
What if you go to Media > Library, “Edit” this image and look at the “file URL” ?
And if you try to explore your site’s files via FTP in case it landed in another unexpected place ?
This image has to be somewhere since you uploaded it!
If you can find it but not where it was expected to be, then it could be something wrong with your URL/upload settings.June 4, 2014 at 11:53 am #8188AngelinaJune 4, 2014 at 11:53 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
If I go to Media the file url is: http://chess.kontini.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lfp141.jpg
and it works.
I just realized I was looking in the wrong site via http://ftp... I was looking at the kontini.com and not at the chess.kontini.com . omg…
The file is visible in ftp now in the RIGHT folder.
Facebook still does not catch it through links though :D.June 5, 2014 at 8:25 am #8198iceableJune 5, 2014 at 8:25 amReply to: Facebook does not "catch" images
If I go to Media the file url is: http://chess.kontini.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/lfp141.jpg and it works.
Does it ? This link leads me to a 404 page too.
If you can see this file at this location via FTP though, then there is either an URL redirection error or a file permission issue.
– To fix redirection errors: Settings > Permalinks: hit save changes (this makes WP review and repair all permalinks and redirections)
– Permissions errors: http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions#Permission_Scheme_for_WordPress
